Population Distribution and Political Prowess
During the 2000s, the Latin communities and the Asian communities had a proportional growth rate. But as of 2015, 17.6% of people (56.5 million) were Latino, and 5.5% were Asian American. Between 200y and 2010, the Latino and Asian American blossomed by about 44%.
These two populations have overtime supported the democrats. This can be seen particularly in the last two elections when Barack Obama was elected in 2012. 71 percent of voters from Latin America and 73 percent of Asian American voters gave him their support. This trend was also seen with Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump during the 2016 elections, where Clinton had 79% of the Latinos while Trump had 18%.
The Immigrants and How They Affect The Economy
The economy has experienced a surplus since the influx of immigrants into the United States. They contributed approximately $2 trillion to the economy and hence grew the GDP.
Immigrants have developed the states through their many innovations and business acumen. It was recorded that over 40% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants and their families back in 2010. Summarily, the impacts of immigration on the U.S. economy can be described as positive.
The Border and Interior Enforcement
The border has been recently uptight with the introduction of increased staffing of the U.S. Border Patrol over the decade. Comparing 2016 to 2006, employment of agents has been 61 percent more in 2016 than in 2006. The border has been tightly monitored by these patrol agents as well as surveillance technology. The DHS in 2016 purchased and deployed 11,863 underground sensors, 179 mobile and video surveillance systems, 39 mobile surveillance systems, 6 unmanned aerial systems, and 272 remote video surveillance systems.
It was noted that during the Obama administration, the removal of immigrants convicted of crimes was prioritized. These convicts were believed to constitute a threat to national security and public safety. The Obama administration established immigration enforcement policies in November 2014. In that same month, the Priority Enforcement Program (PEP) was launched to facilitate the removal of priority immigrants who are (ex) convicts.
Immigration Laws
A lot of states have shifted their immigration laws from enforcement to the integration of unauthorized populations. They have switched from making it difficult for them to survive and thrive to helping them integrate with measures such as the extension of in-state tuition, provision of I.D. cards and Driver’s licenses.
Refugees
Refugees are those who have a sense of insecurity about their environment. They live in constant fear of persecution in their countries due to different reasons like ethnic groups, race, religion, nationality, political opinion. A lot of people have compelling reasons to leave their homes around the world. There has been an increase in the number of displaced people from 33.9 million in 2010 to 65.3 million in 2015. Of this population, there are 21.3 million United Nations refugees, 37.5 million internally displaced and 3.7 million stateless.
Recent Developments On Immigration
Donald Trump, on January 25 to 27, 2017, made three orders regarding immigration. It made it compulsory for making changes and reversing some of the orders Obama enacted during his administrations. The three orders were based on expanding the security around borders, interior enforcements and imposture of refuges’ moratorium. The orders also placed travel bans on citizens of seven Muslim based countries to prevent them from entering the United States. These orders were eventually rescinded and replaced.
Another memorandum was published by John Kelly, the secretary of Homeland Security, that brought about numerous alterations to the border security, interior enforcement and asylum procedures.
