Introduction and Summary
United States dynamic growth has long been influenced by immigration. Immigrants, including refugees, are a significant part of consumers, entrepreneurs, job seekers, job owners, and taxpayers in the United States. Immigrants have added trillions of dollars to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Even though immigrants positively impact the economy, the former administrations have worked steadily to move the United States to a more restricted immigration policy. This can be seen in the increment of immigrants’ tax, policies that support deportation and stricter border policing and detention.

Immigrants Population Today
- Over 43.3 million immigrants live in the United States. 20.7 million Immigrants are naturalized citizens, while 22.6 million Immigrants are non-citizens. For the non-citizens, 1.7 million Immigrants holds temporary visas, while 11.1 million are illegal immigrants, and 13.1 million are a permanent resident.
- In 1965, the Immigrants’ population was 5 percent of the USA population. By 2015, it has increased to 13.5 percent of the USA population.
- In 1960, 75 percent of immigrants were from England, but by 2015, only 11.1 percent are from England. The highest Immigrants are from Mexico with 26.9 percent, immigrants from China were 2.7 million, 2.4 million from India, 2 million from the Philippines, 2 million from El Salvador, 1.3 million from Vietnam, 1.2 million from Cuba, and S1.1 million from South Korea.
- Statistics today show that more immigrants are leaving the USA than coming in. This has reduced the number of undocumented migrants in the USA. Between 2009 and 2014, 1 million Mexican left the USA to their hometown while 870,000 Mexicans came into the USA.
- There has been an increase in the percentage of men to women migrants till 1960. But from 1970, the percentage of female immigrants is higher than that of male. As of 2015, the percentage of female immigrants is 51.4, while the percentage of female immigrants is 48.6
- As of 2013, there were 950,000 LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) immigrants in the USA.
- In 2015, more than half of the immigrants have to own a house. 50.7 percent of immigrants own a house in the USA, and for the native-born citizens, 65.2 percent own their own homes.
- There has been an increase in house ownerships by immigrants than native-born citizens. Between 1994 and 2015, immigrants’ house ownership increased to 2.3 percent while native-born citizens remained constant. According to Jacob Vigor of the University of Washington, Immigrants has contributed $3.7 trillion to the country’s housing market.
- In 2015, immigrants’ poverty rate was 17.3 percent, while that of U.S. born citizens was 14.3 percent.
- As immigrants stay longer in the USA, their standard of living increase, they have a higher paying job, their education standard increases, and they earn more money. The immigrants’ children mostly meet or even exceed educational criteria, earning higher wages than their parents.
- The median annual household income of U.S. born children of immigrants is $58,100, while that of their parents is $45,800. This means the U.S. born children of immigrants earn higher than their parents.
- There has been a decrease in the rate of crime committed or imprisonment of the immigrants. According to Cato Institute research in 2017, immigrants’ crime rate (both authorized and unauthorized citizens) falls to 16 percent, while that of U.S. citizens increased from 11.1 percent to 13.5 percent.
